Psychiatric Services
Understanding Your Mental Health Needs
Psychiatric care begins with understanding the individual's symptoms, history, current concerns, previous treatment, medications, functioning, and overall clinical picture. Not every person who seeks psychiatric care will require medication — recommendations are individualized according to clinical need.
Psychiatric Evaluation
A Comprehensive Starting Point
An initial psychiatric evaluation provides an opportunity to review the individual's current concerns, symptoms, relevant history, previous diagnoses, treatment experiences, medications, and other information important to understanding their mental health needs. The evaluation helps inform diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations. Medication is not guaranteed to be prescribed during the first appointment.
The psychiatric provider may consider:
Medication Management
Medication Is an Ongoing Clinical Process
When psychiatric medication is clinically appropriate, treatment involves more than writing a prescription. Medications may be started, adjusted, continued, or reconsidered based on clinical judgment and the individual's response to treatment. Changes to psychiatric medication should always occur in consultation with the prescribing provider.
Ongoing assessment may include:
Integrated Care
Medication and Therapy Can Work Together
Medication may be one component of treatment, while therapy can help individuals develop coping skills, understand emotional or behavioral patterns, improve emotional regulation, strengthen relationships, and work toward longer-term treatment goals. For some individuals, therapy alone may be appropriate. For others, psychiatric medication may be considered as part of treatment. Some individuals may benefit from a combination of services. Treatment recommendations are always individualized.
Conditions We May Treat
Psychiatric Care for a Range of Mental Health Concerns
Psychiatric services may be appropriate for individuals experiencing a variety of mental health concerns. This is not an exhaustive list, and not every condition is treated with medication.
Younger Clients
Psychiatric Care for Children & Adolescents
Psychiatric care for younger clients considers developmental stage, symptoms, functioning, family context, previous treatment, and other relevant clinical factors. Parents or caregivers are appropriately involved in evaluation, treatment planning, medication management, and ongoing monitoring based on the child's age and clinical circumstances.
Adult Services
Psychiatric Care for Adults
Adults may seek psychiatric services for new mental health concerns, ongoing symptoms, diagnostic questions, medication management, or continuation of established psychiatric treatment when clinically appropriate. Care focuses on the individual's symptoms, functioning, treatment history, goals, and response to treatment.
Psychological Testing
When Diagnostic Clarification Is Needed
Psychiatric evaluation and psychological testing serve different but sometimes complementary purposes. When clinically appropriate, comprehensive psychological evaluation may provide additional information regarding cognitive, developmental, emotional, behavioral, attention, personality, or other areas of functioning. Not every psychiatric client requires psychological testing.
Coordinated Care
A More Connected Approach to Mental Health Care
Trinity CMHC's ability to provide therapy, psychological evaluations, and psychiatric services within one behavioral health organization can support continuity and coordination of care. Coordination occurs according to clinical need and applicable authorization and privacy requirements.

The Process
What to Expect from Psychiatric Care

Treatment Recommendations
Recommendations are individualized and may include medication, therapy, additional evaluation, behavioral strategies, follow-up care, or other clinically appropriate services.

When ongoing psychiatric care is recommended, follow-up appointments allow the provider to assess symptoms, treatment response, functioning, side effects, and other relevant changes.
Ongoing Treatment
Treatment may be adjusted over time according to clinical needs and response.
Questions About Your Medications?
If you have questions about your medications, possible side effects, or other concerns, discuss them directly with your prescribing provider. Do not start, stop, increase, or decrease psychiatric medication without appropriate medical guidance. For urgent medical or psychiatric concerns, seek appropriate immediate professional care.
